Kiyotaka Tsurizaki, a corpse photographer and video artist, has been taking photographs of corpses in dangerous areas around the world, such as crime scenes and conflict zones. This revised edition of "THE DEAD" (published in 2018), the first all-natural color, unedited corpse photo collection in Japan by the author, who continues to work while confronting expression regulations and taboos, is finally here!

I have been taking pictures of corpses for 30 years. While traveling to death scenes in dangerous areas around the world, I have taken on the ultimate subject, the corpse, and have taken on life-threatening challenges with pride and a sense of accomplishment. On the other hand, these thirty years have also been a battle for freedom of expression. The extreme expression of corpses has been exposed to harsh criticism since the early 1990s, and the venues for their presentation have been limited. In recent years, the world has become increasingly sanitized, and it is almost a miracle that I can continue my activities. The world is cruel. If you look at the world and history on that premise, the traces of people who lived and died beautifully shine like a starry sky. I believe that my job is to give names to the nameless dead who have fallen by the roadside.
